Task
Track inventory of special nuclear materials and nuclear waste
Challenge
The nuclear industry has the largest inventory of special nuclear material such as plutonium and enriched uranium. It is critical for security and safety that this material is tracked while being processed at facilities responsible for fuel manufacture, research, reprocessing, storage and disposal. Security of material at all nuclear installations is also paramount in ensuring radioactive substances do not leave a site without authorization. However, false alarms interrupt daily operations for the nuclear industry.
Benefits
Using Arktis neutron detectors integrated into the systems of our nuclear industry partners, process equipment can be accurately monitored to detect the exact quantity and type of nuclear materials. With no bulky moderator required, radiation detectors can be integrated into smaller systems, crucial in areas with limited space.
Arktis RPM systems used at entry/exit points offer alarm categorization reducing the amount of false alarms significantly, ensuring high throughput and enhanced security. Arktis solutions provide 90% reduced false alarm rates compared to conventional systems.
Applications
Uranium enrichment and fuel manufacturing plants, nuclear laboratories, nuclear waste disposal and storage sites and reprocessing facilities.
Scope: Monitor trucks and pedestrians entering and exiting a nuclear power plant
Solutions: RPMs, networked detection system, combination of static and mobile
Scope: Cost reduction of contaminated material triage process and further handling of contaminated material.
Solution: Radiation detection equipment that selects and categorizes contaminated material with higher precision.
